RSS-II Rubber RollingResistance Tester employs the Dunlop rotary power loss machine mechanism:

At a given load, the wheel-like rubber sample assumes a constant-speed movement relative to the wheel. Under pressure load, the surface of the rubber sample in contact with the wheel deforms, and the deformation increases gradually from the point of contact to the middle point; then the deformation gradually decreases from the middle point to reach zero at the departure point. Because of the viscoelastic properties of various rubber formulations, the sum of force during deformation from the point of contact to the middle point is greater than the sum of force during reformation from the middle point to the departure point, this force parallel to the force of load is the power loss value of the rubber sample (J/r). Thereby the rolling resistance of the rubber formulation can be indicated.

Test method:

RSS-II RubberRolling Resistance Tester is equivalent to a small solid tire mileage tester, and is composed of the wheel, loading system, testing and analysis-display system.

The wheel diameter is 102mm, 19mm wide. It is driven by the servo motor with motor speed adjustable at 400, 800, or 1200 rotations per min. By setting the constant rotation speed, the deformation frequency of the rubber under certain rotating conditions can be simulated.

The rubber sample has a outer diameter of 102mm, inner diameter (ie, the size of the metal wheel core) of 63.5mm, and a width of 19mm;

The loading system employs a high-precision hydraulic transmission system to provide the desired load. There are 2 options of load: 15kg and 30 kg, which can be chosen from the operation interface.

As the rubber sample is rotated with the wheel at certain frequency under certain load, its power loss (ie, rolling resistance), deformation value and temperature can be measured.


RSS-II Rubber Rolling Resistance Tester employs advanced modular design, and incorporates computerized, servo control and infrared temperature measurement system. It can be used for guiding the development of rubber formulation (especially tire surface rubber formulation)

RSS-II Rubber Rolling Resistance Tester uses samples of almost identical size to the real tire surface rubber and simulates the rolling frequency and testing load to the conditions the real tires are exposed to. Therefore, the measurements are highly relevant to the real rolling resistance. In addition, the homogeneity of the samples assures the reproducibility and accuracy of the measurements.

rolling resistance tester allows you to set your testing parameters and monitor the operation procedure via a visual digital system. The operator can conveniently choose the rotation speed, weight of load and testing time according to the desired testing conditions. Once the test starts, the machine will run according to the pre-set conditions, and automatically stop upon reaching the pre-set testing time. During the testing, the monitoring system will, in real time, record changes in the testing data until the end of the testing.
